About

The Cause: Nearly everyone will be affected by breast cancer – if not a personal story, a friend or loved one will face it. The good news is that treatment options continue to improve. However nearly 7 out of 10 women facing breast cancer are not informed of their option for breast reconstruction, an alarming statistic in light of substantial evidence that breast reconstruction improves quality of life for breast cancer patients.

Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day– “BRA Day” – was founded with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Plastic Surgery Foundation to raise awareness of breast reconstruction for cancer patients. On October 17th unique locally organized events will be held across the United States and in 20 other countries.  The “Seattle BRA Day Soiree” will feature Beauty Over Cancer, a local non-profit created by a young cancer survivor and beauty industry professional on a mission to help women undergoing cancer treatment feel better and heal.

The Seattle Event: From 6-9pm on Wednesday, October 17th the Seattle BRA Day Soiree will entertain, educate and engage attendees with a fun interactive evening including a tango show, wine-tasting, hors d’oeuvres and a presentation on breast reconstruction awareness, supported by take-home materials. Guests will leave the event with knowledge they can share with their girlfriends and sisters, moms and aunts who face post-cancer questions about their breasts.

Themed on the idea of boosting awareness of the bust, the event will feature a live tango performance by some of Seattle’s top professional tango dancers wearing bustiers, a fashion trend in the tango scene. They’ll be choreographed to motifs of choices, awareness, and beauty. The performance will be followed by an open dance and a tango lesson for beginners.

The event is sponsored by prominent Seattle plastic surgeon Richard A Baxter MD, who published the proof-of-concept scientific article on the internal bra, a technique that helped pave the way for the modern approach to breast reconstruction. The show producer and choreographer is Michelle Badion, who has an impressive performing and producing resumé.

Seattle BRA Day Soiree is hosted by the Washington Wines Festival, a non-profit dedicated to supporting Washington’s wine industry through education.
